Today was unbelievable. North Carolina is actually having a say in the Democratic process to select our nominee. It was a great feeling standing in line talking with other North Carolinians about the candidates. What was so fascinating and heart-warming to me was the woman who stood in front of me casting a vote in a primary contest she hadn't voted in since the 70's. Though she would not reveal who she was voting for (most likely due to the Clinton/Obama supporters having a less-than spirited debate behind us), she did say her heart was heavy when making the decision but decided after she attended the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner here in Raleigh. We talked religion, gas tax, the economy, and briefly on health care. At times it seemed we were talking about the same issues and laughing because both candidates stand on similar platforms; they demand a change from the politics of the last seven years; and their campaigning combined has brought more people to the primary process demanding their candidate and their voice be heard. Just before we seperated and went to our designated voting station, the woman turned to me and said, "Change is inevitable no matter which one of these candidates wins the nomination. And whomever the winner is, I hope he or she is smart enough to give us the opportunity to vote for them together; one ticket, one party."
My fellow citizens, I have cast my vote and regardless of the outcome, I pray they see the strength, the passion, the driving force of our voices, our casting of ballots, and our desire to change the course of our great nation.
